Dr. Jonathan Smith

Dear Dr Smith,

I sincerely want to thank you for making my life better. As we have discussed previously, you do not want credit for this transformation, but I believe the changes in my life are the direct results of your influence; thus, I believe you are responsible for my success. Yes, I did the work, but only with your guidance and encouragement. When I entered your office, I may have had the potential, but I did not possess the ability to perform. I went from someone who did not exercise, nor believe that exercise could actually cure a pain, to a true believer and someone who runs to the bike to prevent knee pain.

The first sign that you were different came when I visited your practice and told you of my ailments, and you actually listened and believed that my pain was real.  The next indication of your distinctive approach was when you were able to convince me to get on the stationary bike and pedal for a half of a mile. You empowered me (I could not have done this without you) and gave me attainable goals all along the way, acting as my cheerleader.  Plus, the atmosphere in your office, the staff, and the encouragement of fellow patients were instrumental in my achieving my goals (again as a result of your influence.)

I slowly began to believe that I could reach 20 miles on the bike. At this point, you went above and beyond your job as my doctor and therapist by taking me on my first real bike ride, on a Saturday no less. You wiped my tears when I was scared and overwhelmed; you educated me in protocol to follow on the trail and carried my bike to my car for me when I blew my tire. These things were not my doing, they were you, and that is what makes you different from the others.

As a result of your care, I’m pain free in both knees, my dates with my husband include 17 mile bike rides, my 9 year old son is no longer afraid to ride his bike and enjoys our biking outings, and I’m planning on introducing the trail to my 19 year old daughter this spring.

Last but not least, you showed me to look at life events, not as obstacles, but as opportunities! I will be forever grateful to you for helping me discover my potential.

Sincerely.

Reva Hartsock

I credit Dr. Jonathan Smith for helping to relieve the suffering of my chronic pain patients.  His unique array of services stems from his dual expertise in chiropractic and musculoskeletal care.  In particular, Dr. Smith's proficiency with the Graston Technique -- along with his compassionate and confident bedside manner -- distinguishes him among his peers.

Dr. Smith's treatments provide pain relief and improved quality of living, while minimizing the costs, inconveniences, and risks attached to more invasive procedures, such as injections or surgery.  One patient that comes to mind is WP, a police officer who developed chronic nerve pain of the forearm while on the job.  The intensity of the pain impeded WP's ability to work and affected his relationships in adverse ways.  The pain was relieved minimally with medication and moderately for only a few days with nerve blocks.

I had begun discussing spinal cord stimulation with WP.  But around that time, I was introduced to Dr. Smith.  To make a long story short, I sent the patient to Dr. Smith, who used a series of Graston treatments with progressive improvement.  Equally important, Dr. Smith won over WP with his bedside manner.  Once cantankerous from untreated chronic pain, WP was able to regain the use of his forearm and make steady gains toward normalcy.  When WP reported his experience to me, I knew that my other chronic pain patients needed to see Dr. Smith as well.

A good plan for treating chronic pain must take into account the whole patient.  Concurrent musculoskeletal problems often add to -- or in some cases exacerbate -- the total pain experience.  These conditions should be identified and treated separately to maximize the success of overall treatment.  For patients who are interested in pursuing pain relief with a strategy that emphasizes, good, conservative care, I heartily endorse Dr. Jonathan Smith with my highest recommendation.

"I first came to see Dr. Smith after I injured myself while training for the Nike Women's Marathon and the Marine Corps Marathon this past fall. The worst of my problems ended up being a stress fracture in my left foot which ultimately prevented me from participating in both events...What I liked best about Dr. Smith was that he didn't lecture me about how much stress running puts on the body (like several of my physician friends did), or tell me I was too old to take up running (like my husband did), or tell me that I needed to stop. He has focused on helping me get better and rehabilitating me so that I could get back to training. Even from the beginning, he knew I would not be able to sit around with an ice bag all day and do nothing, so we talked about ways I could still get a little bit of exercise into my days. I have been very pleased with my treatment and have found Dr. Smith to be incredibly knowledgeable and professional. oh, and it doesn't hut that he's pretty darn funny. I would definitely recommend him without reservation." - I.S.

"The Best Dr. in the World"  - J.N.

"After being referred by my Pain Management Dr for acute hip pain, I was a bit, nope, a lot skeptical about seeing Dr. Smith. During my first visit, Dr. Smith completed my history and physical, asking about me concerns with pain and recovery, what I expected to have happen and more importantly, what I expected from him. I believe strongly in his Patient/Dr joint care vision and rehab to the extent that I recommend him to all my colleagues and friends at every opportunity." -R. M.

"I refer to Dr. Smith and his staff as my 'Body Mechanics'. After all, if you found a vehicle mechanic whose primary interest was to keep you vehicle running for as long as possible wouldn't you go to him? I certainly would!"

- J. L.

"When I first met Dr. Smith pain was the most consistent, overwhelming factor in EVERYTHING to do with my life. Having been through several major and minor back surgeries within a short time, while mechanically, I was fixed, the damage done to nerves and tissue was incredible. I was suffering every day and struggling with increasing fear that the rest of my life would be like this. Within 1 month, however, through the administrations of Dr. Smith and the care of his staff, I saw light at the end of the tunnel: my pain levels were lowering and my ability to tolerate pain was rising. My flexibility and mobility increased, and for the first time in 3 years, a shopping trip didn't put me on bed rest for weeks on end. I also have an incredible support system through the friendships I have developed with Dr. Smith and his staff- to have a doctor and staff that understands how you feel, why you want to scream, and most importantly, what is causing it and what to do about it - that is invaluable and has most definitely given me a better perspective for my future."

- G. M.
